Fortified Porch Addition - Foley, AL (Baldwin County)
In October 2024, Sovine Construction completed this Fortified porch addition in Foley, Alabama (Baldwin County). The homeowner wanted a 23’ x 12’ covered porch seamlessly integrated with their existing structure while maintaining their Fortified roof rating.
We began by meeting with the client to discuss their vision, ensuring the design would complement their home and meet Fortified standards. Once the plan was finalized, we worked with an Alabama-certified engineer to develop structural drawings. These were submitted to the Foley Building Department for permitting, and upon approval, construction began.
For the structure, we installed pressure-treated poles and beams to provide a strong foundation. The roof was stick-framed and secured with proper strapping to ensure a solid connection to the existing home. Since the homeowner’s Fortified roof certification needed to be maintained, we worked closely with a Fortified inspector, documenting every step to ensure compliance.
Finishing Touches & Design Features
Exterior Trim & Siding: All poles and beams were wrapped in Hardie trim, and the gable ends were finished with vinyl shake siding to match the existing home’s architecture.
Soffit & Fascia: A vinyl soffit and aluminum fascia were installed, creating a seamless transition between the new and existing structures.
Ceiling: Inside the porch, we installed a tongue-and-groove ceiling, which was stained and sealed with Sherwin-Williams stain and polyurethane for durability and aesthetic appeal.
Electrical Upgrades: The porch was wired with two ceiling fans and four outlets with two on the poles per the client’s request and two in the ceiling for string lights.
Privacy Feature: A movable wood louver system was installed, providing both privacy and functionality while enhancing the overall design.
Paint & Color Matching: The Hardie siding was painted with Sherwin-Williams paint, carefully color-matched to the home’s vinyl siding, ensuring the addition blended seamlessly with the existing structure.
This project was a pleasure to complete, and we were proud to provide the homeowner with a beautiful, functional, and structurally sound porch while ensuring they retained their Fortified certification protecting their home and insurance benefits.
