Custom Outdoor Pavilion - Silverhill, AL (Baldwin County)
In February 2024, Sovine Construction completed this custom outdoor pavilion in Silverhill, Alabama, creating a versatile and inviting space for the homeowners to enjoy with family and friends. Designed to seamlessly blend with the existing property, this project combined heavy timber construction, a brick fireplace, and a unique blend of exposed and covered elements to satisfy both homeowners’ visions.
Planning & Permitting
The project began with engineered plans designed by an Alabama-certified engineer. Once finalized, we secured the necessary permit through the Silverhill Building Department before breaking ground.
Structural Construction
- Foundation & Support:
Installed marine-grade 8x8 poles, set 4 feet into the ground for superior stability and durability.
Poured a monolithic concrete slab, ensuring a strong, long-lasting foundation.
- Roof Framing:
Constructed the roof system using marine-grade rough-cut 2x6 rafters for added strength and rustic appeal.
Integrated the new roof seamlessly with the existing garage structure.
Installed tongue-and-groove soffits and plywood decking to complete the roof structure.
Shingled the roof to match the existing house, ensuring a cohesive look.
Fireplace & Finishing Touches
A custom brick fireplace was built by skilled masons, providing both warmth and an elegant focal point for the pavilion.
The finishing design was a compromise between the homeowners—one preferred exposed framing, while the other wanted a fully covered ceiling. To meet both preferences, we:
Left the soffit and gable ends exposed, showcasing the beautiful rough-cut timber framing.
Installed tongue-and-groove paneling on the pavilion ceiling, creating a polished yet rustic aesthetic.
A Unique & Rewarding Project
This project was an exciting departure from traditional framing, as the large, rough-cut lumber brought a distinctive character to the space. It even required us to purchase a specialized timber saw —a great addition to our tool collection!
We thoroughly enjoyed bringing this one-of-a-kind pavilion to life, ensuring both homeowners’ visions were met while delivering a beautiful, functional, and long-lasting outdoor space.
